Facebook and Google are often associated as veritable surveillance machines for users. The latest indication in this regard concerns Facebook. According to the latest research, the social network collects a variety of data, including on users’ sexual activity.
The collection of this type of data raises several ethical and moral questions, which become especially serious considering Facebook’s incompetence in protecting its users’ data in the past.
The warning was issued by Privacy International,

Among these apps, the most notable are those used by women to record their menstrual cycle, sexual activity and other sensitive information.

According to the investigation, the sharing of information and data through Facebook’s SDK goes far beyond what would be expected and reasonable. Furthermore, how the social network company treats the data is unknown.
The information shared ranges from the user’s mood, menstrual cycles and sexual activity. In addition to this, they also share the user’s intention to get pregnant, and some of their habits that are submitted to the application: drinking coffee or water, smoking and derivatives are just a few examples.
By specifying the data transmitted, Privacy International discovered that the apps categorically share the user’s sexual activity that is submitted in the application. This information, which should be stored locally, is thus shared with Facebook without the user’s knowledge.
This information not only includes sexual activity, but also whether any type of contraceptive method was used during the act.
Facebook has already responded to this news. In a statement to BuzzFeed News , it stated that it would investigate the situation. It also stated that the app developers may have violated the terms of service. Sensitive information that is unnecessary for the normal functioning of the service cannot be transmitted for advertising purposes.
